I have seen first hand the levels of engagement, pride and the natural embedment of 21C thinking skills like critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, etc when student learning tackles real world problems like global and local poverty, human and animal rights, sustainability matters, health, bullying, cyber awareness….we are surrounded with all sorts of problems whether global or something local and unique. And through the school experience our students are in a position to make change, given the opportunity. There is so much scope for learning and writing a report card that doesn’t list skills learnt, but instead tells a story of how a student has changed as a person, by changing the world around them, and what skills hey have learnt and applied in the process. I Home Schooled and found what worked was to try and incorporate all of the Subjects into a Topic we were exhausting at the time. I gave my Son some Topic Ideas to choose from and I was willing to compromise if he had his heart set on Outer Space, if it was not suggested for example. I worked with him the best way he was able to learn, so he could stay focused and interested. He preferred, solitary, visual, logical and aural at times although we worked on developing the less dominate, some too, even though he did not know that. Social development and hands on practicality is just as important in certain circumstances, and helps to challenge one who is an introvert, for example. Hi, I understand that this video is based about the American education system, which is quite different in my understanding to New Zealand’s. As a year thirteen (last year of high school, or form 7) I feel I have a good grasp at what’s going wrong with education. New Zealand’s education standards are top notch in the world according to what I’ve been told. If that’s the case, then I’m horrified to think how other countries students are suffering. As an above average student, I think that it may mean more coming from me when I say that we are being failed. The students who don’t do well are told they should be studying more, they should be more focussed etc. Me, by no means top of my class yet certainly studious enough, to tell those in charge I struggle, I get patronised. You get good grades, why are you stressed? Why are you coming to the sickbay physically stressed when you’re a diligent student? It’s ridiculous. I’m in a situation where I need to figure out how to get scholarships for university, to get I need to not just pass but gain decent grades, which is harder to do in an environment which is overwhelming, restricting and makes my head feel like it’s going to explode. How can anyone learn like this? I love learning, but the more I went through high school, the more I realised I hated school. Though, I don’t blame High School, it’s earlier where the problems start. First off, my reading skills have always been pretty high. I was the child who preferred to sit reading a book then go out and play. I would issue 20 + books from the library and I’d get through them like wild fire. My writing levels thus increased. However, my comprehension skills were being tested as being low. Why? Because of the test. Different teachers have different ways of issuing the reading test, but having now given the test myself as a toe by toe tutor for students who have reading difficulties (more on that in a minute) I realise the fault in the test. As a child I was asked the read the blurb and then the teacher took the page away from me as I answered questions about the text. I off coarse got it wrong, because I couldn’t remember the entire text. If I could have only scanned the text, I could have had a chance to display my comprehension, but I could not. The second wrong doing by me was that at primary school I was top of my class. I would finish my work in ten minutes, that took others an hour to do. I have no problems with special needs students being placed in a normal classroom, my problem is when the student is suppose to do the teaching. Having finished my work, the teacher would have me teach the kids with learning difficulties and instead of more work coming my way and being challenged, I was stuck, not actually learning, because of the repetitiveness of those first six years of education. In order for an education system to be successful, all needs of children need to be considered. If a child is falling behind, they needs to be helped and encouraged, if a child is way ahead of the rest, they need to be challenged in order to help them increase their own success. My next complaint with the education system comes from my experience with toe by toe. In New Zealand, high school goes from year 9 (form 3) to year 13 (form 7) where year 11 casino slot games elvis, 12, and 13 are the important years where sit NCEA exams. The school has a program where students in year 9 and 10 who have learning difficulties can be tutored by a year 12 or 13 student volunteer in the toe by toe program, a combination of real words and nonsense words to help teach (especially dyslexic) people the skills to read. This program is great and I have personally seen how the students improve. However, as I said years 11, 12 and 13 are the most important years of High School and the program is only for year 9 and 10’s who by the time they finish year 10 have usually still got extreme problems with reading. In the most important years of high school, they’re getting abandoned! When they’re understanding of words matters the most, the school decides that they’re ready to be on their own. How are students expected to pass when they can’t read, a skill that has obviously not been learnt in primary school, as surprisingly, most of the students are quite intelligent and don’t suffer from any actual learning disorders. It makes me so cross that I, having relied on my own natural intelligence to seek my own challenges in reading and using the internet to increase my understanding of the world and learning, that I am going into the world and will become a successful person, but that there are so many more students who are being left behind because they have not been taught how to learn. The analogy of the fish being expected to climb a tree is so true and unfair. As a society we have to ask ourselves what we actually want from our education system? Children who come out conformed, institutionalised? Or a unique mind that could actually influence the world for the better? My generation is facing a doubtful future, with unknowns about war, about Isis, about water supply, limited resources, environmental crisis. We don’t need any more “robots” we need people to be at their best, at their most creative, and more, who are willing to give 100 % to tackle any issue we may face. However, you adults are not letting us grow and learn. I see a bleak future ahead but the only way out is through us children. Stop curbing a child’s natural inclination to learn, stop the molly coddling, start telling the child they can do anything and then give them the resources and the education system that will allow them to reach their full potential. My case here is against the mentality of ‘a’ subject being more important over others. My case here is against teachers pushing the importance of their subject over others because of their own personal insecurities. My case here is against “claiming” to give students a choice and then taking it away. If you ultimately want to do the same thing that was going on before please don’t insult us by calling it progressive!
